Overview

Step out of your everyday and into a weekend designed to slow your pace, settle your mind and reconnect you with nature. This two-day woodworking course invites you to create something small, beautiful and utterly satisfying: a handcrafted three-legged milking stool made from sustainably sourced Ash or Oak.

Two Days: 9:00–17:00
Level: Beginners

Making the Milking Stool

Across two full days, you’ll shape the seat and legs with traditional hand tools, learning how to use a spokeshave and drawknife with confidence. You’ll assemble your stool, refine every surface, and finish it naturally so it becomes a piece you’ll treasure for years. No previous woodworking experience is needed. Just curiosity and a willingness to get hands-on.

What You’ll Learn

• How to safely use hand tools
• Precision marking, shaping and fitting techniques
• How to achieve a refined, professional-quality finish
• The mindful rhythm of slow, traditional woodworking

By the end of the two days you’ll leave with a beautifully functional milking stool.

Practical Details

• All materials included
• Bring a packed lunch
• A detailed welcome email arrives one week before the course

All of this unfolds within the inspiring grounds of Scotney Castle, a setting that adds its own sense of calm and creative energy to the weekend.

This is an ideal woodworking course for beginners, a grounding creative retreat for women, and a chance to learn traditional furniture-making skills in a supportive, hands-on environment.

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the wonderful experience.
I had such a fantastic time - the pace, the atmosphere, and the chance to work with hand tools were exactly what I’d been hoping for.

I really appreciated the small-group environment and the women-only setting. It made the workshop feel welcoming, supportive, and relaxed, and it was lovely spending the day with such an encouraging group of people. My stool looks absolutely lovely at home. I’m so proud of it and have attached a number of photos for you - I currently refuse to let anyone put anything on it in case it gets marked or damaged!”
