
Full-time programme
The full-time programme, which will start each September (a January start is also available), will take students from basic tool skill understanding to designing and making their own furniture. Each practical project is increasingly demanding, thereby developing the skills, understanding and confidence of the student so that they can tackle ever more complicated pieces.
Practical projects
Each project has been designed to enhance skills and confidence to a level where students are able to create and make their own furniture. The final project is of the student's own design or choosing and is made during the last six weeks of the year.
The course is based around the making, primarily by hand, of five pieces of furniture:
- games table
- shaker table
- bow-fronted cabinet
- dining chair
- chest of drawers
Machine woodworking
A particular feature of the course is that it recognises the need for competent woodworking machine skills in the modern workshop. With this in mind, two projects that focus on machines have been included in the programme:
- cabinet making bench
- tool storage chest
Lectures
Subjects covered are:
- hand tools
- powered hand tools
- wood finishing
- woodworking machinery
- timber technology
- design
- veneering
- wooden frame construction
- carcass construction
Term dates
Autumn Term: September - December (12 weeks)
Spring Term: January - April (11 weeks)
Summer Term: April - July (9 weeks)
Students will normally begin the programme in September, but a January or April start is possible upon request.
Course fees
Full-time course: £10,000.
